One of the sights guaranteed to gladden the hearts of any choir is that of a capacity audience. And that is the sight that greeted the choir in its latest concert in St Barnabas Church last Friday (July 16). The choir in its turn, under its enthusiastic and brilliant conductor, Ralph Barnes, entertained the audience with a large range of songs, from the latest pop to classical pieces and from spirituals to The Sound of Silence, by Paul Simon. The accompanist Mike Haines was superb throughout and handled the tricky rhythms of the up-tempo songs in Songs from the 60s with consummate ease, whilst the audience swayed along with the songs that many had sung in their youth; The House of the Rising Sun, Pretty Flamingo, He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother and Da do ron ron, ron, da do ron ron.

In the second half the choir was joined by organist William Morris for two songs, Where Shall I Be, and The Lord’s Prayer .

The soloist was young contralto, Hayley Thomas who, with pianist Pam Taverner entertained the audience with Ave Maria, Voi che sapete from the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart and Panis Angelicus. In the second half she returned with a complete change of mood with Someone to watch over me, and a Lloyd Webber song, Wishing you were somehow here again.

Giving a vote of thanks was Mike Till who was introduced by Reverend Helen Sammon. In his speech he referred to the compere, fellow Lancastrian Barry Woods, when he said that up North they would say of the concert – it were a right gradely do. And he couldn’t put it better than that. Presentations were made by concert organiser, Noel Hitchings who in turn was thanked for the tremendous effort of selling so many tickets. This splendid evening concluded with an encore - Cwm Rhonda, again with William at the organ.
