Welcome to the website of Churchdown Male Voice Choir, a choir that was formed in 1965 in Churchdown, Gloucestershire and which is still going from strength to strength.
The aims of the choir are to enjoy singing, to perform for charitable causes and to experience the comradeship and pure excitement that comes from perfoming in a male voice choir.
We rehearse every Monday night in Churchdown Community Centre from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Either just turn up and meet us, or ring our secretary, Mike Beresford on 01242 674393. You can be certain of a warm welcome and all the help you will need to enable you to settle in to a large and friendly choir.

One of the traditions of the choir is to hold three annual Christmas Concerts in Churchdown Community Centre, and this year was no exception. Playing to houses of over 240 each night the three concerts were an enjoyable way of starting Christmas for everyone.
Compered by Barry Woods the concerts are a perfect time for the choir to let its collective hair down, to relax and to enjoy the convivial atmosphere and the excellent supper. The choir is fortunate to have some superb soloists and all of them were heard during the 3 nights. Tenors Bob Bonwick and Jeff Bourton and baritone Malcolm Webb were all in brilliant form and delighted the audiences with their choice of songs. MD Ralph Barnes was in sparkling form on the conductor’s podium and also sang a very smooth version of Andy Williams’ ‘You’re just too good to be true’. The highlight for most was the choir’s accompanist/singer Mike Haines, who got everyone’s feet tapping with an electric version of an Elvis Presley medley, including ‘Blue Suede Shoes. The audience greeted his performance by calling for an encore, which he responded to by singing a beautiful version of Eric Clapton’s ‘Wonderful tonight’.
Chairman Pete Wilson thanked the choir for a splendid performance over the three nights and presented a plaque to member Ken Palmer for 40 years service with the choir and to Peter Richardson and to Ron McCullen for 20 years service. Pete went on to say that according to the constitution he would have to retire in March, 2012. He said that he had been honoured to have served as chairman and thanked the choir for their tremendous support over the period.
He then introduced the choir’s President Ian Mean, Chief Executive of Gloucester Citizen. Ian thanked the choir for a successful year and looked forward to an exciting future. He particularly commended two forthcoming concerts; on Friday March 9 the choir will be holding a concert in Gloucester Cathedral in support of LINC, the charity that support patients and their families affected by leukaemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. He explained that in February 2009 in Gloucester Cathedral the choir had held the inaugural concert for the County Jenner Appeal to improve facilities at the Edward Jenner County Day Unit. He was pleased to announce that the appeal had been very successful and the March 9 concert will celebrate this achievement. The choir’s favourite soprano Sue Black will be taking part in the concert, which begins at 7.30pm. On Thursday March 22 the choir will be taking part in a Military Music Spectacular in Cheltenham Town Hall when the main attraction will be the military band of Belarus...

Some of the choir members took part in a brilliant concert last Saturday night (Nov 19) in Bristol’s Colston Hall. Taking part were male choirs from Bristol, Somerset and Avon, Basingstoke, Cheddar and Churchdown. Unusually for a massed choir concert, all the songs with one exception were accompanied by an orchestra; the excellent Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra, conducted by William Goodchild and, for the choir pieces, by Steve Daykin, MD of Bristol Male Voice Choir. The highlight for most was the brilliant violist 17 –year old Emil Huckle – Kleve, who electrified the audience with a performance of the evocative The Lark Ascending by R Vaughan Williams. The concert was in support of the Special Care Baby Unit at St Michael’s Hospital, Bristol and was performed in front of a large and enthusiastic audience. Congratulations to all who organised such a splendid concert.

The concert held on Saturday night (September 17) in Gloucester Cathedral was a resounding success. We were very proud to be amongst an array of talent such as; Gloucester Choral Society, The Gloucestershire Constabulary Band, the Cathedral Junior Choir and soloists William Armiger and Kathryn Skipp. The concert was in support of the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion and was attended by military personnel serving in this country and abroad. A full report of the concert will be carried on the website as soon as the final figures are in
Tickets for the next concert, in Gloucester Cathedral are going well and it looks as though it might be a sell out performance.
Tickets are on an unreserved basis so it is advisable to get to the cathedral as early as possible to ensure that you get a good seat.

About 15 choir members turned upat the crematorium for the late Don (Rocker) Jones. The service was taken by the Rev. Tim Newcome and in his address he spoke warmly of the friendship he had enjoyed with Don, and how Don had been quite happy 'putting the world to rights’ over a pint of beer.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, a pillar of the rugby community and a friend to all. May his soul rest in peace.

It was a great concert on Monday night and our thanks go to Dick Brice for his songs, his humour and his sincerity.
Despite having less than two weeks to stage the concert a profit of over £1100 was a stupenous results and says a lot for the generosity and compassion of Gloucestershire folk.
