LINC County Jenner Appeal A brilliant concert by Churchdown Male Voice Choir kicked off the new County Jenner Appeal launched by LINC (Leukaemia and Intensive Chemotherapy) on Saturday February 7 in Gloucester Cathedral. The concert was held in the presence of honoured guests; the Mayor of Gloucester; The Sheriff & Deputy Mayor of Gloucester; the Mayor & Mayoress of Cheltenham and Dr & Mrs Timothy Brain (Chief Constable). Comperèd by Sue Wilson, formerly of BBC Radio Gloucestershire, the concert featured, as well as the choir, organist John Wright, the Dancey Wind Quintet and soprano Sue Black. For many, the star of the evening was Sue, the choir's favourite soprano, whose lovely singing and charming personality wowed the packed cathedral. She was at her best in Pie Jesu from the Fauré Requiem and Caccini's Ave Maria, where her beautiful voice used the famed echo of the cathedral to great effect. The choir was also on excellent form under the baton of both MD John Blenkinsopp and Assistant MD Ralph Barnes, and with pianist Pam Taverner sang some favourite songs with great enthusiasm. Morte Criste was one of the favourite songs, and the final verse, where Sue's soprano soars above the choir was one of the spine-tingling moments. The Dancey Wind Quartet played a variety of pieces from their repertoire, ranging from a polka by Tchaikovsky to dances by Denes Agay via a divertimento by Mozart to New Rag by Scott Joplin. The perfect balance of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon made a lovely sound in the cathedral. John Wright played the popular Toccata and Fugue in D minor by JS Bach as introductory music and, during the concert, Fantasia in F minor by Mozart. A most moving account of her battle with leukaemia was given by Emma Rogers, who has undergone intensive chemotherapy and has endured emotional trauma that accompanies an illness like leukaemia. She told how important it was to support the new appeal that will provide improved facilities at the Edward Jenner County Day Unit. A vote of thanks was given by Dr Gill Rouse, Chair of LINC from Cheltenham General Hospital who reinforced Emma's message and encouraged people to dig deep into their pockets.. The result of this excellent concert was a profit of around £3250 for the appeal.
