Standing ovation for Pied Piper Appeal

Saturday July 25

The Choir and compere Sue Wilson were on sparkling form last Saturday night in a concert in King’s School, Gloucester. The concert was in support of the Pied Piper Appeal and was attended by Ian Mean, Editor in Chief of Gloucestershire Media and his wife, Judy, Peter Hickman former chairman of Pied Piper and his wife Sue, and the present chairman of the charity, Roger Head.

Under the baton of MD John Blenkinsopp and Deputy MD Ralph Barnes with Pam Taverner at the piano, the choir was able to let its collective hair down and sang such great songs as a medley from Paint your Wagon, Sailing, When the Saints, Rhythm of Life, Speed Your Journey, and many more which delighted the audience.

The soloists also were on top form. Ralph Barnes sang two pieces, a moving interpretation of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables and The World in Union, the Rugby World Cup anthem. Jeff Bourton sang three songs, Music Speaks, Saphic Ode by Brahms and the lovely Homeward Bound, by Marta Keen in which Jeff captured the wistful quality perfectly.

In the second half the choir chairman Pete Wilson introduced to the choir and the audience the new choir president Ian Mean. He said that the choir felt very honoured that Ian had accepted the invitation and looked forward to new and exciting times for the choir. In reply Ian said he felt privileged to be part of such a fantastic organisation and looked forward to seeing it in the forefront of choirs performing and making money for charity. He added that the highlight of the evening for him was Ralph’s performance of Bring Him Home, as it conjured up the image of all those parents who are bringing their sons home from Afghanistan either dreadfully wounded or who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

After the final song the audience gave the choir a standing ovation; a fitting end to such a splendid evening.
