The choir sang in the Bacon Theatre last Friday night (August 13) in its third concert in the last 6 weeks. Making his debut as Musical Director of the choir was young Ralph Barnes, who has been Assistant MD since 2003 and who took over the choir on a temporary basis following the retirement of John Blenkinsopp in March of this year. He received the backing of the committee and was promoted to MD during this last week.
The concert was organised by the Gloucestershire Federation of Women’s Institutes and was in support of WI funds. The concert was compered by Sue Wilson who as well as being Vice-President of WI is also VP of the choir. Sue said that recently 5000 women members had been entertained by the group ‘Only Men Allowed’ with some somewhat raunchy Tom Jones songs. She said that although she couldn’t promise those young men, she knew that the audience was in for a good evening with some slightly older ones.
The choir was in good form and performed some very exciting pieces from its repertoire, including songs by Queen, Paul Simon and Robbie Williams. As well as energetically leading the choir from the stand Ralph also demonstrated his other role within the choir. With microphone in hand and with a musical accompaniment provided by the theatre’s sound system, he sang three songs, Born Free, Bridge over troubled water, and the Fields of Athenry, which he introduced by saying that it had been a favourite song of a well-loved choir member, the late Charlie Roberts, and he was singing it in his memory. Jeff Bourton earlier wowed the audience with a trio of songs, which he thought illustrated the aspiration of the WI, that of trying to make the world a better place - I believe, Anthem and You raise me up.
From next Monday the choir will concentrate on rehearsing the songs that it will perform in the concert with the Blues and Royals on Saturday September 11 in Cheltenham Town Hall. The concert is in support of Help for Heroes.
